We all approach the aesthetic aspects of aging differently, and there's no one right way. Personally, I run headfirst into needles every chance I get. That said, I would never criticize anyone who declines cosmetic treatments meant to address the lines and discoloration that typically come with the passage of time, and I'd hope they wouldn't criticize me just for choosing a different route for myself. And far be it from me to criticize someone who wants to enhance their signs of aging—especially when that someone is legendary singer-songwriter and preeminent vanity expert Carly Simon.

Earlier this week, Simon, who turns 82 next month, posted an adorable video to her Instagram and TikTok channels in which she offers some tongue-in-cheek advice for anyone who simply cannot bear the burden of appearing youthful.

“You know, if you're tired of looking young, you can do a very easy process that just really will remedy that problem,” Simon says. She goes on to say that, after washing your face, “You can look at yourself and you can say, 'Hey, I'm as old as I am.'” But if you're not happy with that, Simon says, “You can take one pencil and do the following tricks.”

Simon grabs a well-used, soft brown eye pencil and demonstrates some very interesting shading techniques. “You can emphasize the circles under your eyes, which is always a good one—yeah, you make it puffy. Make it look like it's really puffy. This one, I don't have to do so much,” she says, moving on to her nasolabial folds. “And then you accentuate this line.”

Before moving on to the corners of her mouth, she addresses another well-known sign of aging: hyperpigmentation. “If you have a brown spot, you want to just shade that in,” she says.

“I mean, that's really—it's so easy. It takes less time than it takes to dental floss, which, of course, I don't do really, but sometimes I do,” Simon says. “I highly, highly recommend this particular procedure—not procedure. You get into the routine of it. It becomes a happy habit.”

Is Simon really enhancing her lines on a regular basis? Who knows? But if she's really made it a “happy habit,” like she said, it's probably safe to say nobody does it better.
